A Friend and I

She sits at the window
She stares at the storm
Remembers a summer
So young and so warm
When lightning was beauty
And thunder was charm
And two girls dashed laughing
And went arm in arm
They counted lightning strikes across the hills
They gloried in the flashes and the thrills

She sits at the window
She stares at the gray
Remembers a summer
So young and so fey
When wind was a pleasure
And dampness okay
And two girls dashed laughing
And lived for the day
They whispered secrets as they sat and joked
They didn’t care that they were getting soaked

She sits at the window
She stares at the rain
Remembers a summer
So young and insane
When rainstorms were funny
And dry clothes in vain
And two girls dashed laughing
And grinned without pain
They talked of all the things they’d do someday
They never knew that time could slip away

She sits at the window
She stares at the skies
Remembers a summer
So young yet so wise
When friendships were solid
And truth wore no guise
And two girls dashed laughing…
She closes her eyes
They pass each other now without a thought
Mere echoes of that friendship they forgot
